In the weeks following the Sept. 11 attacks, many U.S. media outlets abandoned their “watchdog” roles in favor of patriotic cheerleading, the consequences of which are still being felt. Those effects and more are examined in “Terrorism and the Press: An Uneasy Relationship,” a new book co-authored by associate professor Brooke Barnett.

An ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ faculty member was honored this week by the North Carolina ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Compact for her dedication to the practice of service-learning in higher education. Pam Kiser, a professor of human services, received the 2009 Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award at a Feb. 11 campus luncheon as part of an NCCC statewide conference.

The president and CEO of one of the most unique food retailers in the world visits Elon on Feb. 10 to speak with faculty, staff and students about ‘intrapreneurship’ opportunities for pending graduates. Stew Leonard Jr. will talk in the LaRose Digital Theate as part of the Entrepreneurship Speakers Series hosted by the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ’s basketball team celebrates its 100th season of competition this year and is marking the occasion with a special halftime recognition on Feb. 7 when the Phoenix takes on Appalachian State.

The C-SPAN Civic Bus returns to ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ on Feb. 13, 2009, with a new exterior design and features that include the latest television production equipment. The bus, which stopped by campus last year, will be parked at the Moseley Center from 9 a.m. – noon.

Mary Gowan, dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, was elected to a three-year term with the Alamance Chamber of Commerce in Alamance County, North Carolina.

Twenty-nine students who spent Winter Term in South Africa collected money this fall to purchase gym uniforms, supplies and books for more than 155 children at a primary school that has worked with ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ since last year through the Global Links Library and Literacy Campaign.
