Elon senior brings ‘Lemonade Day’ to Alamance County

Running a lemonade stand can be the first step toward a business career, as hundreds of children will discover Saturday when they set up shop across Alamance County as part of the national ‘Lemonade Day’ project. For Tim Porter, however, Lemonade Day means so much more, and the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ senior believes what kids have already learned through his efforts will stay with them forever.

Their message was simple: state and federal lawmakers should preserve financial aid for students in the ongoing recession, and to stay competitive in a global economy, schools must widen access for those who want to pursue college degrees.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ junior Amber Mathis has received a Newman Civic Fellows Award from ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Compact, a national organization that aims to improve community life and to educate college students on civic and social responsibility. She is one of 135 students from 30 states to receive the award.

Shaw University in Raleigh has requested ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ's assistance for helping to clean up from the damage caused by the tornadoes earlier this month. The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement has a tornado relief service trip planned for Saturday, April 30.
