Provost Steven D. House has promoted Mary Wise to associate vice president for academic affairs and Peter Felten to assistant provost. Both promotions are effective June 1.

“Diversity” has become a buzzword on college campuses that misses a larger point, said activist and BET personality Jeff Johnson, who visited campus Saturday for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ’s inaugural Diversity Leadership Conference. More should be done to foster greater community, he said, and responsibility for that rests with student leaders.

The nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society installed its newest chapter Tuesday during ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ’s Convocation for Honors, where faculty and staff members of Phi Beta Kappa were charged with upholding the society’s values by committing themselves to intellectual freedom, the pursuit of knowledge and the ideal of excellence in scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ junior Molly Schriber has been named a recipient of a 2010 Udall Scholarship, an award dedicated in part for students pursuing careers related to the environment. It is the second time since 2008 that an Elon student has received the prestigious national award.

Catherine McNeela, professor of performing arts and coordinator of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ's music theatre program, has been named the university's William S. Long Professor, an honor named for the institution's first president. McNeela's appointment was made by President Leo M. Lambert in recognition of her 20 years of outstanding ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ, scholarship and leadership in developing Elon’s nationally recognized Music Theatre program.
