Greg Hlavaty, lecturer in English, published an essay in Arts and Letters (Fall 2010 No. 24). This essay, "How You're Made," chronicles the author's attempts to become part of Appalachian hunting culture through apprenticeship to a younger sportsman.

Barbara Gordon, an associate professor of English, made appearances on local morning television programs this fall to speak about the publication of her co-authored book, Breast Cancer Recurrence and Advanced Disease: Comprehensive Expert Guidance, published by Duke University Press.

Rebecca Pope-Ruark, assistant professor of English, presented a paper at the 75th Association for Business Communication National Convention in Chicago last week.

Colonnades, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ's literary magazine, received a 2010 national Magazine Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press over the weekend at the organization's joint conference with College Media Advisers in Louisville. The Pacemaker is the highest honor ACP gives to its members.

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning has named ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ faculty members Michelle Trim, David Neville and Ketevan Kupatadze as CATL Scholars for 2011-2013. The selection process was highly competitive, with 10 faculty applying for the three positions.

Prudence Layne, an assistant professor of English and coordinator of African/African-American Studies at Elon, was one of 10 national directors of Black Studies programs selected to participate in a Summer Administrative Workshop sponsored by the National Council for Black Studies and the Ford Foundation.

Kevin Boyle's poem "The Lullaby of History" has been included in a book called Literary Trails of North Carolina, published by UNC Press.

Professor Kathy Lyday-Lee presented a paper titled "The Melungeon's Will Get You If You Ain't Nice: The Myth of the Melungeons in Literature and Pop Culture" at the Popular Culture Association of the South on Oct. 7 in Savannah, Ga.
