Elons Class of 2029 arrives on campus ready for new connections and opportunities /u/news/2025/08/22/elons-class-of-2029-arrives-on-campus-ready-for-new-connections-and-opportunities/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 18:47:43 +0000 /u/news/?p=1025395

Screams of joy rang through a residence hall Friday, Aug. 22 as Samantha Probst 29, her roommate Leah Rappaport 29 and Jonas Hinsdale 29 came together in a big hug Probst telling Hinsdale hes the reason she and Rappaport are now roommates.

Samantha Probst 29, her roommate Leah Rappaport 29 and Jonas Hinsdale 29 greet each other during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

Jonas is one of my best friends from home, said Rappaport, who is from Westchester, New York. I knew I wanted to room with somebody who is also interested in the theatre field, and I said, Jonas, do you know anyone in your major who I could room with? and he was like, Actually, this girl Sam is perfect.

Hinsdale connected the two young women, and they clicked immediately.

From our first conversation, I just knew she was the one, said Probst, who is a Vocal Scholar from Redondo Beach, California. She is just so joyful and made me so excited to move to campus and live with her.

Samantha Probst ’29 and her parents John and Christie P’29 put together her room during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

Achieve your dreams

Now all three students are members of 消消犯s Class of 2029, who moved to campus on Aug. 22, coming from 43 states and 15 countries, including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Panama.

The three first-year students are also part of the Performing Arts Living Learning Community (LLC), one of the more than a dozen LLCs at Elon where students live in the same residential area, interacting academically and socially with each other and with faculty that share the same passion, interest, or academic focus.

When we found out we were living on the same floor, we were so excited, said Hinsdale, who will be majoring in music theatre. Im so excited for our next four years together, and were going to have a blast because were already such good friends.

All three students chose Elon for the performing arts, with the university recently ranked #4 Best College Theatre by the Princeton Review and named one of the 25 Best Drama Schools of 2025 by The Hollywood Reporter.

I knew about the alumni and its reputation and specifically the small class sizes, and the opportunities that came with it, said Probst, who will major in music theatre. But then, when I did more digging and research on the school itself, I realized how many opportunities there are with study abroad and having a double major or minor.

Probst’s parents, Christie and John Probst P29, say they will be sad to see her leave home but know she will thrive at Elon.

She’s such a sweet, good kid, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed having her home, but we’re also really excited for her to take the next step, and we know that Elon’s going to be a great place for her to do that and grow as a person and excel and hopefully achieve all of her dreams, said John.

No place like Elon

As the university welcomes more than 1,500 new students for the 2025-26 academic year, Elon will now have representation from all 50 U.S. states, but some students like Praise Ogundeji 29 are not coming from far away. She moved to Elon on Friday from Greensboro, North Carolina, and says, after her first tour at the university, she didnt want to go anywhere else.

My tour guide was an eye-opener, she just made me fall in love with the school, said Ogundeji, who plans to major in international business.

Ogundeji is part of the African Diaspora LLC, which is open to students of all academic interests and racial/ethnic backgrounds. It is the perfect fit for students interested in the expansive, global and interconnected nature of the lived experiences of those who have ancestral ties to Africa.

T鞄艶 whole experience is exciting to me, said Ogundeji. Decorating my dorm, meeting new people and our activities here.

Elon requires students to live on campus for the first two years of school with first-year students living in one of five residential neighborhoods: Colonnades Neighborhood, Danieley Neighborhood, East Neighborhood, Global Neighborhood and Historic Neighborhood.

Various 消消犯 student organizations assist with the Move-In Day process on Aug. 22, 2025.

The roommate connection

Isabelle Drake 29 and her roommate, Kylie Mazzei 29 connected online before coming to Elon, bonding over the color theme of a future room in the Historic Neighborhood.

We both said blue and white, so I think that was a big green flag, said Drake, who is from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and is a Change Maker Scholar.

Before Move-In Day, Drake visited Mazzei in her hometown of Essex Fells, New Jersey, where they attended a concert together and were able to bond.

We hit it off. It was a good connection, said Mazzei, who plans to study elementary and special education.

Drake is planning to study in the School of Communications, exploring fields in broadcast meteorology or sports reporting. She was drawn to the university for the study abroad opportunities and Elons unique Winter Term in January. Julie Drake P29, Isabelles mother, praised the Move-In Day process and is excited for her daughter, her first child leaving for college.

It looks like the entire community is out. Im impressed. They really have pulled all the stops out, said Julie, about Move-In Day. Its been a whirlwind. Its an exciting time for her. Its definitely going to be difficult for us at home, and well definitely miss her. But we have high hopes. Its going to be an awesome year.

Julie says the college selection and touring process was almost like a full-time job, but after touring Elon, she knew it was the right place for her daughter.

We toured a very large university, and I remember they said, If you go three blocks that way, youll find that and Oh, and theres a transit bus, youll want to use that. I just felt so overwhelmed, and I was just thinking, Im not sure this is the right fit for Isabelle, said Julie. And then we came here, everything is walkable, and its beautiful. On the tour, I feel like the tour guide was hugging every third person. You could tell it was a close-knit community.

Roommates Alessio Vaccaro 29 and Will Saratella 29 prepare their room during Move-In Day on Aug. 22, 2025.

While Drake and Mazzei didnt know each other before Elon, roommates Alessio Vaccaro 29 and Will Saratella 29 went to high school together in Needham, Massachusetts.

I committed to Elon and Will was thinking about it, and I was trying to get him to commit, said Vaccaro, who plans to study finance. Im most excited about meeting new people and getting into classes and seeing what its like. It will be a cool, new change-up from high school.

And as students began to unpack their rooms and say goodbye to family, they are reflecting on their new home and their decision to attend Elon.

I really wanted that one-on-one personalized experience, and I knew that I would only get that at Elon,” said Probst. “It just seemed to check off every box at the end. It was just the perfect fit, and I made the perfect choice.

Across campus, hundreds of students, faculty and staff, including members of Elon’s football, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, cheer and dance teams helped unload vehicles and carry dorm-room essentials inside. Members of Elon’s Facilities Management team put utility carts and trailers to use transporting belongings from lines of vehicles to the front doors of residence halls.

Move-In is one of my favorite times, I like seeing people getting their stuff in being all happy and excited and getting to make those connections now, said Michaela Shapiro 27, an international and global studies major and resident assistant helping with Move-In Day on Friday.

Choosing Elon

Cooler summer weather and sunshine welcomed the 1,620 first-year and 74 transfer students to Elons campus. The Class of 2028 is Elons most diverse class in university history 23% identify as ALANAM (African American, Latino/Hispanic, Asian Pacific Islander, Native American, Alaska Native and multiracial). This class is coming to Elon from 43 states and 16 different countries including Mexico, Switzerland, France, China and Germany. Twelve percent identify as first-generation college students and the class overall has an average core GPA of 4.08.

T鞄艶 Honors Program was really appealing and I also enjoy the small class sizes which means you get to make connections with faculty, said Neil Parmer 28, from Cary, North Carolina, who is looking to major in public health studies and business analyticsand isone of just 63 Class of 2028 students in Elon’s prestigious Honors Program.

T鞄艶re were a lot of schools, and it was hard to decide what school had what programs for you and what worked best for you and I think Elon had a combination of what I was looking for,” Parmer said.

Happy to be home

While roommates like Silk and Deangelis made a connection quickly, current Elon students say it’s not a race.

Give yourself grace,” said Danielle Giraldo ’25, a strategic communications major who offered her advice to the Class of 2028. “Its ok to be nervous, homesick, tired, emotional, etc. Youre entering a new phase of life! Its going to be hard, and youre going to make mistakes, but youre going to learn and grow so much!”

And Deangelis admits, there’s still some nerves but she’s excited for what’s to come.

On Saturday, Aug. 24, the new students will gather for New Student Convocation where President Connie Ledoux Book will address the class for the first time, and they will receive their acorn an Elon tradition symbolizing the start of their journey at the university.

Several projects in the works this summer will be ready for students and faculty when they return to campus in Fall 2024.

The first phase of the Loy Farm Living-Learning Community (LLC) EcoVillage will be completed this summer, including six sustainable houses set to open in Fall 2024.

The LLC will offer an opportunity for hands-on learning through horticulture, agriculture and research with the . It will eventually include 12 sustainable homes along with a renovated ranch house that will serve as a common area. 消消犯 designed the first home alongside Robert Charest, associate professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Studies, with input from University Planning Design and Construction Management. The remaining 11 homes are being designed and built by outside firms.

Each of the houses were designed by a different designer that gave us their solution for what sustainable living looks like, so each house has a different focus, said Brad Moore, associate vice president for facilities and chief facilities officer. This is an educational project because the students have been intimately involved in the design and construction processes and now, they will continue to learn firsthand about the benefits of sustainable design as they live in the houses.

Each house is about 600 square feet and includes two bedrooms, a shared bathroom and common areas. The 12 students living in the houses during the 2024-25 academic year will have the opportunity to try them out before the university starts the second phase of the project. After the 2024-25 academic year, the university will search for six new designers for the remaining homes.

Hook, Brannock and Barney Halls

The final renovations of the Historic Neighborhood residence halls will be completed this summer with the finishing touches being put on Hook, Brannock and Barney Halls. Over the last seven years, work has been completed on Sloan, West, Virginia, Smith and Carolina. This summer, crews are updating the furniture and finishes in the residential rooms of Hook, Brannock and Barney in time for Move-In Day.

Last year we did the bathroom upgrades, the year before we did window replacements, said Moore. To keep that building occupied during the school year, weve had to do the renovations in multiple phases.

Gerald L. Francis Center

The fourth and final renovation of the Gerald L. Francis Center will be completed this summer with the addition of an office suite for nursing faculty and an update to the commons space. The building houses

The university has been updating the Francis Center over the last several years by adding skills labs, classrooms, student study spaces and a interprofessional lab equipped with augmented, virtual and mixed reality technology. T鞄艶 East Neighborhood provides a dynamic place for first-year students to begin their journey at Elon, said Moore. T鞄艶 building will provide a range of new amenities and features that will help the residents of East Neighborhood grow to be active global citizens.

This university hopes this space will become an eastern gateway to main campus, denoting to travelers that they have arrived at Elon.

McMichael Science Center
