¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ seniors Christopher D’Inzeo, Samuel Ramirez and Genesis Tolbert have been awarded the NIH Undergraduate Scholarship.

The event was planned by Elon's leadership team overseeing a six-year, $377,800 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to transform first-year STEM experiences and promote belonging in STEM programs among historically underrepresented groups.

Ten individuals nominated by their colleagues were recipients of five annual awards recognizing contributions to ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ, mentoring, scholarship and service.

Urquhart's research examines mobile phones' effect on procrastination and mental health as well as the best ways to minimize distractions and determine the relationship between mobile phone usage and academic performance and self-efficacy.

The university's top ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ research award comes with $20,000 to support and celebrate academic and creative achievements.

Through a two-year fellows program, the six students in this multidisciplinary cohort will undertake mentored ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ research projects, enroll in specialized coursework and engage in community-based learning with diverse religious communities.

Altmann’s research project involved collecting and testing 2.5 pounds of cigarette butts and devising a cigarette smoking apparatus to find out which metals are being released by littered butts.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Justin Clar will work with ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ researchers to assist the Consumer Product Safety Commission in standardizing methods used to characterize the release of nanoparticle-based coatings from various coated surfaces.

The $377,800 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is designed to improve introductory science experiences for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ students and increase retention of talented STEM students.
