Shane Claiborne, an “Ordinary Radical,” at Duke Chapel – Jan. 25 /u/news/2009/01/21/shane-claiborne-an-ordinary-radical-at-duke-chapel-jan-25/ Wed, 21 Jan 2009 13:28:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/01/21/shane-claiborne-an-ordinary-radical-at-duke-chapel-jan-25/ Come join the Truitt Center on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 25, as we travel to Duke Chapel to hear a message given by Shane Claiborne.

Identifying himself as an “Ordinary Radical,” Shane currently lives in an intentional Christian community in the inner city of Philadelphia known as the Simple Way. Along with several other communities associated with this organization, the people at the Simple Way attempt to live in community with one another and with the rest of their neighbors in the inner city. In addition, Shane has also worked with Mother Teresa at her mission in Calcutta, traveled to serve the people of Iraq shortly after the U.S. invasion, and has authored several books, including The Irresistible Revolution.

Please come with us to hear Shane; we will be meeting at Boney Fountain at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, to hear Shane speak at 11 a.m. and will follow with a free lunch.
Email us at truittcenter@elon.edu if you plan to attend or have any questions.

Truitt Center Movie Night – “Paradise Now” on Nov. 13 /u/news/2008/11/11/truitt-center-movie-night-paradise-now-on-nov-13/ Tue, 11 Nov 2008 13:18:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/11/11/truitt-center-movie-night-paradise-now-on-nov-13/ The Truitt Center will be hosting a movie night with the film Paradise Now, a movie that follows two best friends living in Palestine who are called up to carry out a suicide-bombing in Israel. A call for peace amidst a chaotic world, this film offers us a glimpse into what it is like to be caught in the middle of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After the movie we will have a discussion about the issues raised by the film: what is the role of religion in this situation, where do we go from here, and what can we do to address these issues? Joining us for the discussion will be a recent college grad who just returned from Palestine where he spent 6 months working with an NGO in the West Bank.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Feel free to email any questions to zsmith2@elon.edu
