Vance, a Political Science major with minors in Leadership Studies and Business Administration from Millersville, MD, will be one of approximately 40 students from around the world learning about global leadership.

While in Prague, Vance will take classes from international scholars, participate in workshops and cultural activities, travel on field trips (including one to a concentration camp in Terezin), and engage in community service.

“I have the utmost passion for helping others,” Vance said. “By living, learning, and leading with students from all around the world, I will gain insight and grasp knowledge about leadership unlike I have ever before.”

In support of the university’s initiative to create global citizens and informed leaders for the common good, the Center for Leadership awards this grant on behalf of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, which seeks to cultivate social entrepreneurship skills in university students. Established in 1999, GLP is an educational opportunity dedicated to provide young people with the skills and opportunities they need to become active and responsible citizens in the global community.

Leadership Fellows examine social justice values /u/news/2014/09/15/leadership-fellows-examine-social-justice-values/ Mon, 15 Sep 2014 15:55:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/09/15/leadership-fellows-examine-social-justice-values/ What better way to analyze leadership in stimulating conversation than over lemonade and cookies?

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows assembled for the year’s first Fellows Forum, an event where Leadership Fellows come together for monthly gatherings to discuss leadership from different perspectives, as well as current global issues. The Center for Leadership hosts the event and invites a faculty/staff member or local community leader to speak with the Fellows.

This month Cherrel Miller-Dyce, assistant professor of education and Multicultural Center faculty fellow, presented her ideas on social justice and democratic leadership with the presentation “Pride, Privilege, Power, and Prejudice: Leading from a Social Justice Paradigm.” The Leadership Fellows were encouraged to incorporate social justice values into their demonstrated leadership by employing their leadership skills in an interpersonal context.

“It was so neat to start this school year with such an enlightening forum,” said sophomore fellow Julia Lescarbeau. “Dr. Dyce offered great insights challenging us to become aware of our pride, privilege, power and prejudices as democratic leaders. Her presentation was interactive and engaging.”

In addition to the speaker, the program has started a new initiative of “Food For Thought.” This program employs a debrief session after the address for small group discussions on the topic at hand.

“Dr. Dyce’s speech was very thought provoking and was a great topic of conversation for our inaugural Food for Thought,” said sophomore fellow Jenny Fukunaga.

“Not only did Dr. Dyce offer new challenges and perspectives, the reflection enhanced our thinking further,” Lescarbeau said.

The Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows distinguish themselves as authentic leaders on campus and in their communities. The Leadership Fellow program aids leaders by further cultivating students leadership skills and putting those skills into action to make a positive difference in the world. 消消犯 are able to demonstrate their personal foundations for leadership and take value in their growth as leaders through their college careers and beyond.

Scouts for Equality meeting April 18 /u/news/2013/04/18/scouts-for-equality-meeting-april-18/ Thu, 18 Apr 2013 14:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/04/18/scouts-for-equality-meeting-april-18/ This past February, the Center for Leadership and Multicultural Center hosted the 2nd annual Intersect: Diversity & Leadership Conference. At the conference, the keynote speaker Zach Wahls, author of My Two Moms, recounted his story of being raised by two lesbian parents and his experience speaking at the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing that proposed a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. His words were inspiring and provoking; they captured America’s attention and uplifted his reputation nationally. Bringing this passion to the conference, he inspired the audience and encouraged the attendees to take action.

During Zach’s speech he explained the influence of Boy Scouts on his development as a person and a leader. Following the speech, a student asked about Zach’s feelings towards the Boy Scouts currently with the media attention about the LGBTQ ban in the organization. Through this question, the audience learned how Zach innovatively founded Scouts with Equality, an organization working to create an equal and inclusive scouting community.

Learning about this organization and listening to Zach’s story motivated Elon students to take action and join this organization. Excitedly, through student volunteers’ work and campus interest in becoming advocates has led for Joel Wagner, the Mid-Atlantic Field Director to come to Elon’s campus to lead a meeting Thursday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Moseley 217. This meeting is open to students and the community to learn more about Scouts for Equality and how we all can take part in repealing the ban against LGBTQ participants and Scout Masters in Boy Scouts.

Michelle Kusel publishes article in Journal of College Student Development /u/news/2012/10/01/michelle-kusel-publishes-article-in-journal-of-college-student-development/ Mon, 01 Oct 2012 15:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/10/01/michelle-kusel-publishes-article-in-journal-of-college-student-development/ Michelle Kusel, assistant director of the Center for Leadership, co-authored a study on transgender college students entitled, “Transgender College 消消犯: An Exploratory Study of Perceptions, Engagement, and Educational Outcomes” in the latest edition of the Journal of College Student Development. This study is the first-ever quantitative study on this specific population of college students. The Journal of College Student Development is one of the most prestigious scholarly journals in higher education, where only 7-10% of articles submitted for publication are accepted. The article was originally accepted two years ago and was published in the September-October 2012 edition. Transgender individuals include people whose gender identities do not comply with binary assumptions (only male, only female) and whose birth sex deviates from their internal identification.

There is a lack of studies on transgender college students. This quantitative study explored transgender students’ perceptions, engagement, and educational outcomes across 17 dimensions of the collegiate experience. The national study identified 91 transgender students and compared the population to heterosexual students and non-transgender lesbian, gay, and bisexual students. Results suggest some significant differences in the experience for transgender students.

The Center for Leadership provides students opportunities for leadership development, including the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program and the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows. You can find more information at http://www.elon.edu/leadership.
