Screening of Captain Abu Raed /u/news/2010/05/18/screening-of-captain-abu-raed/ Tue, 18 May 2010 17:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/05/18/screening-of-captain-abu-raed/ The Elon community is invited to a screening of “Captain Abu Raed”, a film produced by Laith Majali ’05, the 2010 Commencement speaker.  The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. in McCrary Theatre.  All are welcome.

“Captain Abu Raed” tells the story of a lonely janitor at Amman’s International Airport who finds a discarded captain’s hat in the trash at work. A neighborhood boy spots Raed wearing the hat on his way home and believes the man is an airline pilot.

Raed wakes up the next day to find a group of neighborhood children waiting eagerly at his door. A friendship ensues, and Raed takes the children around the globe through his colorful, fictional stories and encourages them to follow their dreams.

It’s an endearing story that you won’t want to miss.

Reserve a spot by March 1 for a Middle East Pilgrimage /u/news/2010/02/09/reserve-a-spot-by-march-1-for-a-middle-east-pilgrimage/ Tue, 09 Feb 2010 19:42:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/02/09/reserve-a-spot-by-march-1-for-a-middle-east-pilgrimage/ The 消消犯 Middle East Pilgrimage, sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, will take place June 28-July 12 in Jordan and Israel–Palestine. The trip for alumni, parents and friends is hosted by Elon President Leo M. Lambert and Laurie Lambert. Jim Pace, a professor of religious studies, and Phil Smith, associate university chaplain, will serve as facilitators.

Be sure to reserve your spot by March 1.

The trip is patterned after the Middle East Travel Seminar (METS), a 30-year-old program first started to provide seminary students opportunities to better understand the history, culture, geography and religious traditions of the Middle East. We will see and experience far more than is offered on the typical “Holy Land” tour.

Pace has taught at Elon for more than 35 years and has traveled and studied extensively in the Middle East. For the past two summers he was a leader of the Middle East Travel Seminar. Smith was a participant with METS in 2000 and wishes to help others discover the rich history and culture of the region. He has led cultural immersion and service trips to Morocco for the past eight years. This will be the Lamberts’ first visit to the Middle East.

For more information, please contact Phil Smith at psmith19@elon.edu or by telephone at 336.278.7729. .

Join us as we explore and learn together!
