Student / Faculty Workshop: Writing as a Social Scientist /u/news/2018/01/25/student-faculty-workshop-writing-as-a-social-scientist/ Thu, 25 Jan 2018 14:55:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/01/25/student-faculty-workshop-writing-as-a-social-scientist/ “Writing as a Social Scientist”

Wednesday, Feb. 28, Oaks 212, 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.; snacks provided

This workshop will teach students to write as a social scientist by reviewing common genres in the discipline, identifying typical writing features, and examining expected styles, etc. The intended audiences for this workshop include students taking classes in the social sciences, students majoring/minoring in a social science, and faculty who teach social science writing. Faculty are invited to encourage their students to attend and to build this workshop into their syllabi (please inform the CWE if you want your entire class to attend so we can plan accordingly).

The workshop leaders are Laura Roselle (professor of political science and policy studies) and Kim Epting (associate professor of psychology and Center for Writing Excellence Faculty Fellow). Roselle is a co-author (with Elon’s Sharon Spray) of “Research and Writing in International Relations” and “Research and Writing in Comparative Politics.” Epting studies the connection between language and thought in the context of writing and regularly teaches social science writing in courses like the senior seminar in psychology.

Writing Boot Camps – Winter Term /u/news/2018/01/02/writing-boot-camps-winter-term/ Tue, 02 Jan 2018 19:25:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/01/02/writing-boot-camps-winter-term/ Writing boot camps enable faculty and staff to devote a full day exclusively to their writing projects. They are a great way to launch or make progress on your research/creative/professional writing project.

What happens during boot camp?

Boot camp is NOT a writing workshop.  It is a quiet space that allows you to direct your undivided attention to your writing.

We provide a quiet place, table space, power for your computer, lunch, breaks, and hot/cold beverages throughout the day. And uninterrupted time to concentrate. Email, tweets, phone calls, and other distractions are not allowed, except during breaks and lunch.

How long does a boot camp last?

Elon main campus boot camps typically run from 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.

Elon Law School boot camps typically begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.

How do I sign up?

Follow the registration link next on the session you would like to attend, and complete the registration form.

Where: Oaks Commons 207; lunch provided for those who register

Paula Rosinski, professor of English and director of Writing Across the University, will give a brief review/refresher on designing effective writing assignments (so we’ll discuss the importance of backwards design, the major components of an effective assignment and designing evaluation criteria).

Sara Vanderpool, instructional technologist with Teaching and Learning Technologies, will discuss how the recent upgrade to Moodle now allows instructors to give feedback to student writing submitted to Moodle (within the interface – so no downloading required) and makes grading more efficient with the evaluation criteria side-by-side with the student text.
