George Padgett
A short story by journalism/communications professor George Padgett appears in the March issueof Cowboys & Indiansmagazine, now on newsstands. 


Titled “Hey Old Man,” the story won firstplace in the 2007 Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story contest. Padgett was recognized at theannual Hillerman Writers Conference in Albuquerque, N.M., in November.  

“Hey Old Man” is the story of Taos PuebloIndian Harvey “Mailbox” Grayfeather, who stands by the side of the road every day waiting for the mail to be delivered.  That is why he is called “Mailbox.”  The “why,” of course,  is the mystery.

in the 2007 Tony Hillerman Mystery Short Story competition.  The
$1,500 grand prize was awarded Nov. 3 during a luncheon at the
Hillerman Writers Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  In
addition to the cash prize, Padgett received several copies of signed
Hillerman novels and short story collections.  His winning story
“Hey Old Man, Why Do You Wait There?” will appear in the March 2008
issue of Cowboys & Indians magazine, cosponsor of the annual competition.

The articles featured Ellen Burchell, the director of Burlington’s Caring Kitchen, a weekend meals provider for area homeless. The students are part of a communications class sponsoring a benefit dinner for Caring Kitchen on Tuesday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. at he Powerline Church, 701 Manning Avenue, Elon.

A silent auction with donations from local vendors will take place, and cookbooks with Caring Kitchen recipes will be available for purchase.

Caring Kitchen works to provide hot meals every Saturday and Sunday to community members in need. Success of the kitchen is dependent on volunteers and donations.

Beginning with a discussion on what diversity means and why it is important, the textbook provides a detailed roadmap for 消消犯 and learning about diverse communities and suggestions for beginning what is often a difficult community conversation. Hundreds of professional tips demonstrate how to better cover multicultural communities with individual chapters on specific audiences, including African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, Arab Americans, gay men and lesbians, people with disabilities, and people of varying faith, age, and economic class. Activities for 消消犯 and learning about diverse communities help journalists and educators bring the issue of diversity into the newsroom and classroom.

Padgett’s paper, “Media Gone Limp: Failure of U.S. Media’s Diversity Efforts,” contended that the failure of U.S media to reach parity in employment of people of color resulted in its failure to adequately report the impact of Katrina on New Orleans’ black population.

Nelson’s paper, titled “Diversity and Dialectic: Hegel Saw the Future,” addressed the views of German philosopher GFW Hegel maintaining that he saw clearly the tension that energizes the debate about diversity.

Padgett’s winning entry was for a project conducted by his GST course, Five Freedoms: First Amendment Under Attack, offered last fall. 消消犯 in the class presented a First Amendment education program, including a skit about the five freedoms, to fifth grade students at Elon Elementary. Padgett will present his 消消犯 ideas as part of a Best Teaching Practices panel at the AEJMC national conference in San Francisco in August.

The program included an appearance by fourth president and First Amendment architect James Madison. The class is taught by Dr. George Padgett, School of Communications.
