American Aquarium with Ryan Gustafson presented by WSOE – Dec. 4 /u/news/2009/11/30/american-aquarium-with-ryan-gustafson-presented-by-wsoe-dec-4/ Mon, 30 Nov 2009 14:36:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/11/30/american-aquarium-with-ryan-gustafson-presented-by-wsoe-dec-4/ Join WSOE and American Aquarium – the hardest working band in the South – for a night of hard-nosed, soft-hearted country-founded rock, good company and of course, cheap beer.

“This is what the Boss would’ve sounded like in his early years, if he were raised in North Carolina instead of Jersey.” -Leah E. Willis, Knoxville Metro Pulse

“hard-nosed, soft-hearted country-founded rock pushed down the road by a driving rhythm section and an acoustic guitar’s unrepentant major chords but guided to safety by expansive lovelorn narratives”-Grayson Currin, Independent Weekly

“..they’ve become one of the most entertaining acts in the Carolinas, letting the raucous alt-country rock ring.”-Sean Rayford, Columbia City Paper

with Opener, Ryan Gustafson and Band, from Durham, NC

WSOE Live at Lighthouse: Shakermaker and Puritan Rodeo – Oct. 2 /u/news/2009/10/01/wsoe-live-at-lighthouse-shakermaker-and-puritan-rodeo-oct-2/ Thu, 01 Oct 2009 12:26:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/10/01/wsoe-live-at-lighthouse-shakermaker-and-puritan-rodeo-oct-2/ Please rock out with us on Friday, October 2nd for WSOE’s second show of the semester.

SHAKERMAKER with PURITAN RODEO

“Shakermaker’s weightless pop floats on a strange breeze. It’s all wooden and rustic until the ’60s psych guitars whip through your hair, and those sunburned melodies take hold. Like a modest Shins, ‘verb bagged up and quirk transformed, Mitch Eubanks and Jesse Moorefield understand the understated but aren’t scared to add proper garnish or let a guitar shout when it should…” (read more at www.wsoelive.wordpress.com)

“Borrowing heavily from country’s string band tradition, Puritan Rodeo walks with a honky tonk swagger, a bluegrass rollick and a songwriter’s sincerity. There’s enough rock ‘n’ roll on the album’s seven tracks to convince the country-music-naysayers, but at the same time, Puritan Rodeo plays to the grand traditions of authenticity, simplicity and honesty…” (read more at www.wsoelive.wordpress.com)

WSOE and SUB present: The Sammies and Florez at Lighthouse Tavern – Nov. 6 /u/news/2009/10/01/wsoe-and-sub-present-the-sammies-and-florez-at-lighthouse-tavern-nov-6/ Thu, 01 Oct 2009 12:24:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/10/01/wsoe-and-sub-present-the-sammies-and-florez-at-lighthouse-tavern-nov-6/ Please rock out with WSOE, The Only Alternative, and SUB on Friday, November 6th, live at Lighthouse Tavern!

“Whattaya get when you combine such dubiously-phrased monikers as Frank Backgammon, Donnie Yale, Conrad Vacation and Bobby Freedom? Why, Charlotte’s Sammies, of course, quartet of self-proclaimed country boys whose idea of roots music is more Echo and Iggy than Johnny and Willie. The music is supercharged beer-and-babes rock, but the Sammies draw inspiration from so much of the rock ’n’ roll canon they’re impossible to pin down. Their party-perfect debut romps through double-time Ramones tempos, spiky post-punk, Stooges ’tude, AC/DC power riffs, DEVO robot rock, Byrds jangle and early Roxy Music textures.” -()

“Enter FLOREZ. a seamless merge of three distinct voices and personalities over a backdrop of driving guitar. The combination produces a fresh, saucy vibe, laced with enough charm to excuse a comparison of women to rabid puppies. Erik lays groundwork with a smooth bass heartbeat and solid background vocals, while Alex stirs the audience with spirited guitar licks and singing in English and Spanish. And with Justin laying down powerful grooves, FLOREZ combines solid musicianship with vocal charisma, giving voice to the kind of groovy, pop-rock you’d expect from these handsome boys next door.” -()
