With stories of alumni who left ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ this spring to launch ambitious careers, and advice from administrators on engaging with the world as global citizens, New Student Convocation on Aug. 28 brought together freshmen who gathered as the Class of 2014 for the first time Under the Oaks of campus.

Elon students who want to ensure they are on track to reach their career objectives now have a convenient way to measure their progress. For much of the academic year, a four-year student career development plan is on display in front of the university bookstore in the Moseley Center.

LabCorp, the largest private employer in Alamance County and a pioneer in genomic testing and the commercialization of new diagnostic technologies, held a reception on Aug. 19 to recognize high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates enrolled in the Elon Academy who completed a summer internship with the company.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ welcomed the Class of 2014 on Friday with a clear blue sky and low humidity making move-in day a relatively comfortable experience for students and families who carried clothes, computers, food and furniture into residence halls across campus.

Upon learning how boredom plagues troops in the Middle East, incoming Elon freshman Peter Gallagher and a friend started Games for Heroes, an organization that to date has collected more than $100,000 in hand held video games and cash that today keep hundreds of off-duty soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan entertained.

Associate professor of English Drew Perry’s debut novel “This is Just Exactly Like You” has been named one of seven finalists for the 2010 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize.

For decades, art historians ignored the work of impressionist painters who used their talent to paint scenes of domestic life in 19th century America. A forthcoming book by associate professor Kirstin Ringelberg argues that it’s time for scholars to reexamine these paintings, which depict a more complex story of the time normally seen to show women simply as “decorative” objects.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ faculty and staff learned more about long-term plans for diversity and global engagement, residential life and academic programs in three presentations during the opening ceremony for Planning Week 2010, the official start of the academic year for university employees.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ leaders conferred degrees Saturday morning to students in the Master of Education program during a Commencement ceremony in Whitley Auditorium attended by faculty, staff, family and friends of the graduate students.

Former (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News executive editor Don Bolden, retired physical plant assistant director Stanley Greeson and retired professor Linda Thompson Weavil received Elon Medallions on Aug. 23, 2010, in an annual ceremony that celebrates the highest honor a person can receive from the university.
