Collecting coats and blankets for African immigrants

Donate any extra coats or blankets that you have! Clean out your closets over Thanksgiving break and donate to a great cause!

Periclean Scholars, class of 2010, are working with a Greensboro organization to collect coats and blankets of all sizes for African immigrants who are currently living in North Carolina. Our partners in Greensboro work with immigrants from all over Africa and have asked our help in collecting coats and blankets to help during the winter months. Your extra coats and blankets will smooth the transition for these people from a hot African climate to their first North Carolina winter.

All donations would be greatly appreciated.

Periclean Scholars 2010 swiping meal cards for Ghana

Periclean Scholars 2010 will be swiping meal plans in Moseley this week from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as part of a fundraising project for various areas of rural Ghana including the
construction of a health care center, the construction of an elementary
school, collecting children’s books for a library, etc

Celebrate Earth Day on April 22

Where: McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Why: To learn more about African environments and cultures!

-Panel presentation on “Oil in Africa” (Sudan, Nigeria, Angola)
-Poster display on various social and environmental issues
-Readings from the memoirs and novels of our favorite African authors
-Session on how to make art out of recyclable materials
-Information on environmental initiatives in which you can take part
-Traditional African foods will be served!

Children’s book collection for primary school in Ghana

Periclean Scholars class of 2010 recently hosted the visit of Dr. Augustus Vogel, a former Peace Corps worker in Ghana. During his time in Ghana, Dr. Vogel assisted in the construction of a primary school and an accompanying library. The community has struggled to fill the library with books that are of interest to the Ghanaian students. (One of the few books is the biography of Nancy Reagan – not exactly a hot topic for elementary school students in any country.)

Dr. Vogel has requested help in acquiring children’s books for grades K-12 that would be of interest to West African elementary school students. Dr. Vogel has a specific list of books that they would like to supply in the library, but any used book or monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.
