The joint presentation addressed “Challenges and Lessons Learned Through �þ�� Collaborations” with Alan Heath from Dartmouth College and Laurie McGowen and Erin McLaughlin from the University of Notre Dame. The session summary had several outcomes:

Consider how academic systems can create web applications to support academic and administrative needs including a standardized process to handle the project life cycle with agile development methodologies to design and implement approved projects. Explore a case study partnership that transformed a print journal of first-year writing to a custom web-based publication that blended a variety of media, afforded pedagogical scaffolding, broadened accessibility, and reduced student textbook costs. Hear about how co-budget and shared license requests benefit the campus-wide system and meet institutional objectives.

The �þ�� Technology Service Desk has recently received several reports of targeted messages asking users to update their Elon account information. The link or request for information takes the user another website outside of the Elon network.

Please remember to be vigilant during this increased phishing activity and report any issues to the �þ�� Technology Service Desk (Help Desk) at 336-278-5200.

Elon's Instructional & �þ�� Technologies staff present at national conference

At the recent , members of Elon’s Instructional & �þ�� Technologies Arif Khan, Dan Harder and Christopher Waters presented about the virtual computer infrastructure at Elon. The team partnered with Abilene Christian University to discuss and review the current challenges and positive aspects of virtualizing computers across campus.

The presentation covered a variety of topics addressing how �þ�� (a 2012 ACUTA Institutional Excellence Award winner for their Virtual Computer Initiative) and Abilene Christian University (a 2013 ACUTA Institutional Excellence Award honorable mention for their Virtual Lab Pilot) have approached desktop virtualization with specific strategic goals. Universities shared the rational for virtualizing desktops, the challenges they experienced during implementation, lessons Elon and Abilene have learned along the way, benefits observed with their virtualization projects, and their future plans for desktop virtualization.

According to a 2009 survey conducted by Citrix, 82 percent of higher education IT professionals viewed virtual desktops as a solution for cost reduction and better use of IT resources. As a result, many institutions have experienced success in virtualizing servers within data centers and look to desktop virtualization as the next logical frontier.
