On Friday, April 20, from 11:30-1:30, Action Greensboro is sponsoring an informal networking event for college students. The event will take place at the beautiful new Center City Park in downtown Greensboro. There will be professionals representing commercial lending, mortgage lending, environmental engineering, law firms, human resources firms, and various other occupations. In addition, there will be live music, free lunch for students with a college I.D., and a drawing for a Dell Computer valued at $1,500. See you there!

Smith presents at conference

On February 2, Chris Smith, Director of Employer Relations, presented “Career Counseling and Placement: Clearing the Air” at the North Carolina Counseling Association Conference in Raleigh, NC.

The goal of the program was to help career counselors understand the context that leads administrators and deans to focus on placement. By understanding the context and the underlying goals such as accreditation and higher college rankings, career counselors can position their services in such a way that they can meet the developmental needs of their students, while still preparing them to take advantage of placement opportunities. A model was presented, showing that for students to acquire desirable internships and jobs, they must first develop the career exploration and management skills taught by career counselors.

Employer Relations Internship — Paid & On-�þ��

General Description:

The goal of this internship is to support the outreach efforts of the Director of Employer Relations. The intern will develop skills directly related to market research, business development and data management. In addition, the intern will assist with customer relationship management and marketing, and will gain extensive knowledge of post-graduation employment opportunities.

Specific Responsibilities:

The intern’s primary responsibilities will include:

Market Research

• Research organization Web sites

• Data-mining internal and external employer databases

Data Entry

• Enter/update contact information

• Enter/update job and internship postings on the Elon Job Network (EJN)

Report Generation

• Generate monthly activity reports regarding Elon Job Network Activity

• Generate custom reports as requests arise

When time allows, the intern’s secondary responsibilities will include:

Customer Relationship Management

• Employer communications including telephone contacts, email and postal communications.

• Development of regular communication media (may include a listserv &/or short employer letter)

Schedule and Pay

The intern will work 15 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters at a rate of $5.15 per hour. Academic credit is optional depending on the needs of the intern.
