On April 25, 2009, over 80,000 individuals in over 100 cities across the world voluntarily abducted themselves to bring light to those abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army in northern Uganda.  We slept outside and waited to be rescued by a mogul: someone who captures the attention of the media and whose voice can bring attention to northern Uganda.  When a city was rescued, those able traveled to the next city that hadn’t been rescued and waited to move on to the next city.  The event came to a climax in Chicago when 600 committed individuals waited in the rain and cold for Oprah Winfrey to come to their rescue (which she did).

“Together We Are Free” is the story of one individual, Natalie, but also a story of those 80,000 who dedicated themselves to bringing attention to the war in northern Uganda.  This inspiring film is being brought to us by none other Invisible Children’s Mid-Atlantic Roadies team.  If you think you’ve seen every IC film, you haven’t seen this one.

Come out to LaRose Digital Theater next Wednesday, October 21 and watch a film that will open your eyes to these seemingly invisible children and open your mind these seemingly impossible feats.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Catie Serex at cserex@elon.edu

Haidari currently works in diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and the United States government. His personal story is not unique among citizens of Afghanistan, having lived through the hardships of both the Soviet occupation in the 1980s and Taliban rule in the 1990s.

His family was internally displaced in the 1990s until taking refuge abroad. Haidari dreamed of helping his home country and was given the opportunity to do that in 2001 both in an official capacity and through his own independent endeavors and currently serves as a diplomat of the government of Afghanistan.

Haidari will be speaking to the Elon community about his experiences growing up in Afghanistan as well as American intervention in the country and quality of life for the people of Afghanistan.

The Rescue (of Joseph Kony’s child soldiers) – April 25 /u/news/2009/04/20/the-rescue-of-joseph-konys-child-soldiers-april-25/ Mon, 20 Apr 2009 15:06:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/04/20/the-rescue-of-joseph-konys-child-soldiers-april-25/ Since 1986, the nation of Uganda has been at war with Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army.  For the past four years the organization Invisible Children have been working tirelessly to end the war. We’ve screened multiple films; we’ve had rally events; we’ve lobbied our government representatives; we’ve sold thousands of bracelets; we’ve displaced ourselves; we’ve night commuted; we’ve done it all.  And the war still has not ended.  So this year, we’re taking action in a very big way.  0n April 25, in more than 100 cities across the United States, and in 13 countries across the world, we are going to be abducting ourselves to bring light to the abducted in an event called “The Rescue”.

On that day, Elon’s Invisible Children club will be traveling to the nearest Rescue event in Raleigh, N.C.  We will get there for the event’s start at around 3 p.m. and will walk single file, much like the children who are abducted in their families, from Pullen Park to the Capital Building in downtown Raleigh 2.2 miles away.  We will then wait for an individual of influence in the media to come and Rescue us by committing themselves to working towards helping do all they can to end the war in northern Uganda.  Once we have been rescued, we will leave the Capital Building at dawn to return safely “home”.

If you are interested in participating in an event that is shaping up to be a defining moment in American and possibly world history, then please contact Travis Watts (twatts2@elon.edu) to learn how to travel with Elon. More than 57,000 people have already committed themselves to attend this event across the world. Come to The Rescue and be part of history!

Note: Service hours will be given to students who attend The Rescue with Elon.  If you plan to go to Raleigh on your own, simply sign up at The Rescue home page (http://therescue.invisiblechildren.com).  If you plan to go with Elon, stop by Mosely this week to pick up a medical release form.

For more information regarding what will occur while at The Rescue and what you need to bring to the event, contact Catie Serex (cserex@elon.edu)
