The set includes four pieces recorded in the studios at Arts West by Assistant Professor of Music Carey Harwood, who teaches studio techniques and guitar. The music represents a wide range of color and expression and, although modern, retains a folk-like quality that compliments the tonal nature of the guitar. More about Jonathan Romeo :

Jonathan Romeo is a composer of orchestral and chamber music whose work has been performed by orchestras, ballet companies, and chamber groups in the U.S. and in Italy. Jonathan’s musical style is grounded in his classical training and inspired by his extensive work with traditional musicians in Southwest Virginia. Rich and multifaceted, his compositions arise from a synthesis of his diverse musical experience.

Jonathan’s compositions include commissions, readings, and performances by Richmond Symphony, Richmond Ballet, Florence Dance Company & Orchestra Leopoldo della Ferrovia dello Stato (Florence, Italy), Plymouth Music Series Orchestra (Minneapolis, MN), Kingsport Symphony, VCU Symphony, and Shanghai Quartet. His work, John Hardy’s Dream for banjo and orchestra, premiered with Mike Seeger and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University (1986) followed by a Master of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (1989), where he served as instructor and director of the VCU New Music Ensemble. His composition teachers have included Alan Blank, Dika Newlin, and John Lambert at the Royal College of Music in London.

Currently, Jonathan lives with his wife and two children in Tazewell County, Virginia. During his tenure with The Crooked Road (2008-2020), he organized and promoted traditional music concerts, educational programs, festivals, and tours. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tazewell County Fiddlers’ Convention in 2018.

Chip Newton performs with jazz guitarist Martin Taylor /u/news/2019/03/01/chip-newton-performs-with-jazz-guitarist-martin-taylor/ Fri, 01 Mar 2019 20:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/03/01/chip-newton-performs-with-jazz-guitarist-martin-taylor/ Guitar instructor Chip Newton participated in a four-day workshop with multi-award winning jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, Jan. 17-20, 2019. This gathering was held in Benicia, California, and included lessons, concerts, and jam sessions with guitarists from the U.S. and Canada. Co-led by fingerstyle virtuoso and recording artist, Peppino D'Agostino, the weekend included concerts on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Newton performed guitar duets with Taylor on the Saturday concert, and played with Mr. D'Agostino in his Friday workshop. In addition to the wonderful evenings of music, all of the attendees enjoyed fine gourmet cuisine catered by local restaurants and the beautiful scenery of the nearby San Francisco Bay.
