However, no prior research has considered the role of censored information on tourism competitiveness. The question that arises is whether the type of information, censored or uncensored, significantly affects tourism competitiveness. In other words, do countries with a free press, which are able to provide unrestricted information regarding tourism services, differ in their tourism competitiveness from countries with a controlled press, which can, to some degree, regulate and control the tourist information provided?

Using the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI 2007), this study concludes that while the vast majority of countries that enjoy a free press are highly competitive in the tourism industry, countries with controlled media also are capable of successfully competing in the global tourism industry, targeting their information in order to promote global tourism.

The Journal of Travel Research is a premier, peer-reviewed research journal that publishes the most current and influential scholarship on travel and tourism behavior, management and development. Das and DiRienzo have article accepted /u/news/2008/07/24/das-and-dirienzo-have-article-accepted-2/ Thu, 24 Jul 2008 20:36:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/07/24/das-and-dirienzo-have-article-accepted-2/ Tina Das and Casey DiRienzo have their paper “Assessing Terrorist Risk and FDI Using Relative Information Measures” accepted for publication in Applied Economics Letters. The paper is co-authored with Anthony Mancuso from the SAS Institute.

Using the five sub-indices of the World Market Research Center’s Global Terrorism Index, the paper explores how the different dimensions of terrorist risk impact the inflow of foreign direct investment using a Shannon information measure of relationship. The results suggest that a country’s proven ability to prevent terrorist activity has the most significant impact on investment decisions in regard to foreign direct investment.

Das, DiRienzo, and Burbridge have article accepted /u/news/2007/09/18/das-dirienzo-and-burbridge-have-article-accepted/ Tue, 18 Sep 2007 16:33:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/09/18/das-dirienzo-and-burbridge-have-article-accepted/ “Global E-government and the Role of Trust: A Cross Country Analysis”  has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Electronic Government Research

Abstract
Past studies have explored exogenous and endogenous factors affecting a country’s level of e-government. However, to date, no empirical study has considered the impact of social factors, in particular social trust, on the level of e-government. Using cross-country data from 140 countries, this empirical study extends the research by examining the impact of trust on the level of e-government while controlling for economic, democratic, and institutional factors using a regression analysis. Further, this study employs a cluster analysis to identify emerging global patterns in e-government. The major empirical finding of this research shows that, after controlling for the level of economic development and other socio-economic factors, social trust as proxied by ethnic and religious diversity emerges as an important factor in determining the success of e-government.
