Emilia Phillips, this fall’s visiting poet, will judge our poetry contest this year.  Emilia is the author of four books of poems and teaches in the MFA Program at UNC-Greensboro.

Tar River Poetry will publish “Story Time” (about planting bulbs, in this case a light bulb) and “All the Riches” (about mining a goldfinch).

Quarterly West will publish “All Knowing” and the North Carolina Museum of Art’s “You Are the River Anthology” will include “Seed Pods and Chastity, 1458,” about a panel painting in the collection, “The Triumph of Chastity.”

Kevin Boyle published three poems this winter.

“My Visigoth Kin” (about burial wishes) and “Father Figures” (about the public life of crows) appeared in KESTREL.

“Ambition at Nine” (about playing with plastic soldiers) came out in PRAIRIE SCHOONER.

Daye will be giving a virtual reading on October 20th at 7:30 PM.  Please contact Kevin Boyle at boylek@elon.edu for details on how to view the reading.

At the reading, Daye will be announcing the winners of the annual Frederick Hartmann Poetry Contest, sponsored by an alum, William Maness.

To enter the contest, submit one or two poems to Kevin Boyle with your name on the poem(s). No hard copies this year.  Please send an email with the poems attached to boylek@elon.edu.  In the subject, please put the words Poetry Contest.  The deadline is Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 PM.

“After the Fall of the Dictatorship” focuses on the year that Boyle lived and worked in Spain, and “Late Twenties, Unmarried” examines the difficulties of living in a male, somewhat violent world.  

The poems appear in Vol. 92, Issue 3 of the magazine, which is available . 

Here are the very strenuous rules:  you should submit one or two poems, they should be typed, and your name should be on the poems.

Please give the poems to me by Monday, Oct. 15 at noon.  You can slide them under my door (207 Whitley), send them through campus mail (CB 2338) or put them in my mailbox (Alamance 305).  If you are abroad, send me an email and let me know where you are.

Eduardo Corral will announce the winners at his reading on Wednesday, October 17at 7:00 in Johnston Hall (across the tracks on S. Antioch).  Money is involved for the winners; pleasure is involved for all who come to the reading.

Here’s info on Eduardo Corral:

He earned degrees from Arizona State University and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His debut collection of poetry, (2012), won the Yale Younger Poets Prize, making him the first Latino recipient of the award. He grew up in Arizona, the son of two Mexican immigrants.  Praised for his seamless blending of English and Spanish, tender treatment of history, and careful exploration of sexuality, Corral has received numerous honors and awards, including the Discovery/Award, a Whiting Writers’ Award, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Up to two submissions per person made be made at the office of Kevin Boyle, professor of English, at Whitley 207, sent through campus mail to Kevin Boyle CB 2338 or emailed to Jeana Schickedantz at jschickedantz@elon.edu.

Emailed entries should include “POETRY CONTEST” in the subject line along with the author’s last name. Typed poems should have the author’s name on them. 

Entries must be received by 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3.

Winners will be announced by Cate Marvin . That event will begin at 7 p.m. in Johnston Hall on South Antioch Avenue on South ľĂľĂČČ.
