This annual competition is open to all 消消犯 消消犯 students. Essays of approximately 1,500 words should be submitted in response to the following topic:

What did Thomas Jefferson have to say about the topic of religion? Write an essay defining and interpreting Jefferson’s position on this important issue.

Your essay must show an understanding of Jefferson’s “A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom in Virginia, 1785.” This document can be found by clicking .

You may use any additional sources that you choose. Your paper must be appropriately documented and must include an annotated bibliography. (“Annotated” means that you write 2-3 sentences evaluating each entry).

Prizes will be awarded to the top three essays:

  • First place: $1,000
  • Second place: $600
  • Third place: $400

In addition to receiving the prize money, the first place winner will be invited to tour Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello and stay overnight at The International Center for Jefferson Studies courtesy of Dr. Daniel P. Jordan, President of The Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

Here are the contest rules:

  • All entries must be typed, double-spaced, on numbered pages, with a cover sheet containing the title only.
  • The writer’s name should not appear on the paper itself. Instead, an index card containing the author’s name, local address, phone number and the title of the paper should be attached.
  • Essays must be fully documented using any standard documentation style.
  • Submissions must be handed in to Melissa Holmes, Registrar’s Office, Alamance 102, by 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2003.
  • All entries will be judged by a faculty panel. The identities of the authors will not be revealed to the judges until judging is completed.
  • Essays will be judged according to the quality and the creativity of the response to the question asked. Additional criteria for judging include: quality of written English; quality of logical and rhetorical strategies; thoroughness of research; accuracy and completeness of documentation; individuality and style.
  • 消消犯 may want to consult a core of materials placed on reserve in Belk Library.

Winners will be announced at the Carret/Jefferson Dinner on Monday, April 14, 2003.

If you need help adding or dropping a course OnTrack, please refer to https://ontrack.elon.edu/help for detailed instructions. 消消犯 who are registering late or need assistance with Drop/Add may go to the Academic Advising Center located in Duke 108.

All currently enrolled students may use OnTrack during the below scheduled times for Drop/Add and Late Registration. 消消犯 will be allowed to make changes to their schedules from the time their access begins until 11:00 PM on Wednesday, December 8.

Winter Term Drop/Add using OnTrack begins Jan. 5 /u/news/2004/01/05/winter-term-drop-add-using-ontrack-begins-jan-5/ Mon, 05 Jan 2004 13:24:00 +0000 /u/news/2004/01/05/winter-term-drop-add-using-ontrack-begins-jan-5/ 消消犯 may drop/add for Winter Term 2004 using OnTrack. Access for all students will begin at 6 PM, Monday January 5 and continue until 4 PM, Wednesday, January 7. 消消犯 adding courses with special fees must do so in the Registrar’s Office during regular business hours. Classes with special fees cannot be added online. 消消犯 who are registering late or need assistance with drop/add may go to the Academic Advising Center located in Duke 108 during regular business hours.

You may access OnTrack anywhere there is an internet connection but be advised that some Drop/Add situations require signatures/assistance from members of the university community. Please be patient and keep in mind the system may be slow during peak times. If you do not have a username and/or password please contact the computer support help desk at ext. 5200 to receive or reset your login information. If you have problems finding or selecting classes, see your academic advisor or meet with an advisor in the Academic Advising Center, Duke 108, ext. 6500.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by the Registrar’s Office located in Alamance 104. Also, remember to click on “My Class Schedule” after adjustments are complete to verify your schedule.

If you do not plan to attend Winter Term you MUST inform the Registrar’s Office in writing prior to the first day of classes, January 6, 2004. If we do not receive notification from you, your name will appear on the class rolls. A course for which a student registers and does not attend, or does not officially drop, will be recorded as an “F” on the student’s academic record.
