A winter storm that moved through North Carolina over the weekend left Elon’s campus blanketed in snow and ice, but caused very few disruptions to university operations. In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; classes will not be held today and most university offices are closed.

Facilities Management staff have been working to clear main sidewalks, roadways, and parking lots at the university, but slippery spots are likely.

A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service remained in place until 9 a.m. Monday due to black ice on roadways. Any roads that remain wet Monday night will have the potential to refreeze again, with lows Tuesday morning
in the 20s.

• Sturdy footwear and caution are advised when walking around campus. Watch for falling branches, which are likely to occur.
• Lakeside and McEwen dining halls are currently open and other retail locations will open as staffing is available and as long as power does not become a concern. Be sure to check the Elon Dining Menu & Hours site for any updates and last-minute changes.
• Driving is not recommended.

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ should be preparing for the possibility of power outages. Residential facilities are not on generators, so if power loss affects your residence hall, you should plan to shelter-in-place. Off-campus residents are advised to have nonperishable food that can be prepared without electric appliances. With the increased risk of ice, driving is strongly discouraged on Sunday.

Are there changes to campus services?

• Many campus operations will keep their regular Winter Term weekend hours; changes will typically be announced in advance, but can sometimes change last-minute, based on staffing levels and area conditions.
• Always check the for the latest information about what’s open and what’s on the menu.
• ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Recreation and Wellness has adjusted Sunday and Monday hours at the Koury Athletic Center, open Sunday 12–8 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Visit the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Recreation and Wellness website for details about adjusted hours of operation for other facilities.
• Student Health Services has adjusted Sunday and Monday hours, with appointments available Sunday 8–11 a.m. and Monday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Remember that telehealth services remain available on-demand 24/7 through TimelyCare.
• Asymptomatic testing at McCoy Commons will be available today from 1:30–3:30 p.m.; Symptomatic testing at the Ellington Center will be conducted today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What if the storm affects classes?

Because there are only 15 class meetings, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ classes are rarely, if ever, canceled during Winter Term. If weather conditions affect campus operations and safety, typically one of two options is used during Winter Term:

• A delayed start to classes, either at 10 a.m. or noon, using schedules previously approved for this purpose
• Shifting classes online, through synchronous or asynchronous instruction methods or activities that are communicated by faculty to the students in their course

Graduate and law faculty, program directors, and deans communicate directly with graduate and law students about their class meetings and schedules if weather affects campus operations.

How do I stay informed?

It is important that everyone continues to monitor news and weather forecasts and watch for Elon announcements throughout the storm. These are your primary sources of Elon information:

Since the storm seems likely to continue as predicted, university officials are only planning to send an additional email update if conditions on campus change significantly.
