The associate professor of psychology will bring an accomplished history of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ and research to her new role in the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
[/caption]Associate Professor Amy Overman will begin a four-year term this fall as associate director of the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
Overman, a faculty member since 2007 in the Department of Psychology, specializes in cognitive neuroscience and the science of learning and memory. She earned her doctorate in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, where she was affiliated with the Learning Research and Development Center, and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition.
During her seven years at Elon, Overman has demonstrated a consistent record of effective and thoughtful ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ, applying research-based principles about learning, cognition and the brain to her course development and assignment design. She has created three new courses and has been a recipient of both Teaching and Learning and Diversity Infusion grants from CATL.
As part of her teacher-scholar identity, Overman has mentored 19 ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ researchers who have presented at regional and national conferences and co-authored publications. She has also been a mentor to five Duke University graduate students through the Preparing Future Faculty program.
Overman has served as a reviewer and disciplinary editor for a range of journals, including one focused on ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ neuroscience education, and she has published over a dozen peer-reviewed articles on aspects of learning and memory.
She has held a number of important service roles on campus including chairing the Academic Technology & Computing Committee, working with colleagues across campus to develop the Neuroscience minor, and serving on the Long Range Planning, Curriculum, and Academic Standing committees, as well as on the Emerging Technologies in Teaching & Learning Advisory Group.
Overman takes over the position from Associate Professor Alan Russell, who assumed a new university role this academic year as faculty director in The Colonnades residential neighborhood.
Professor Pam Kiser chaired the associate director search committee. She was joined on that committee by faculty colleagues Katie King, Kevin O’Mara and Lucinda Austin.
