Elon students celebrate, document 2008 election results

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ journalism students provided coverage of the 2008 election, including stories about a spontaneous student celebration following the announcement of Barack Obama's election as president.

An estimated 300 students gathered outside residence halls, marched through campus and then formed a circle on Young Commons to sing the National Anthem and pray The Lord’s Prayer.

Meantime, Phoenix 14 News, the student-produced television news program, produced five and a half hours of live election coverage. Local TV station WFMY carried a story about the Phoenix 14 election coverage.

Elon students covered Obama’s Nov. 3 campaign rally in Charlotte and posted photojournalism blogs for a course led by faculty member Randy Piland.


ELON MOCK ELECTION

The Elon campus community took part in a pre-election mock vote from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. The vote was sponsored by the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ Council on Civic Engagement and Office of Civic Engagement.

A total of 1,695 students, faculty and staff cast electronic votes in the straw poll. Obama/Biden polled 65% of the vote, with McCain/Palin gaining 32%. Here are detailed results:
