John Cirelli 27, Peyton Patrick 27, Executive Director of Faculty Development Heather Keith (Radford University) and Director of Design Thinking Danielle Lake presented a session to help participants explore the value of wicked problems pedagogy and design thinking assessment strategies for building civic engagement capacities of faculty and students. They described the design and assessment of university-wide wicked problems programming, showing how it can support students authentic engagement with problem- and community-based learning in order to understand and mitigate some of the worlds most pressing problems. In particular, they shared the story of Radford Universitys Wicked Problems Initiative, which includes experiential learning courses, a minor, community engagement opportunities, co-curricular activities, and a university-wide Wicked Fest showcase that visualizes civic capacities, collaborative skills, and dispositions to act.
