John Cirelli ’27, Peyton Patrick ’27, Executive Director of Faculty Development Heather Keith (Radford University) and Director of Design Thinking Danielle Lake presented a session to help participants explore the value of wicked problems pedagogy and design thinking assessment strategies for building civic engagement capacities of faculty and students. They described the design and assessment of university-wide “wicked problems” programming, showing how it can support students’ authentic engagement with problem- and community-based learning in order to understand and mitigate some of the world’s most pressing problems. In particular, they shared the story of Radford University’s Wicked Problems Initiative, which includes experiential learning courses, a minor, community engagement opportunities, co-curricular activities, and a university-wide “Wicked Fest” showcase that visualizes civic capacities, collaborative skills, and dispositions to act.
