Order in the Court! An Introduction to Law and Justice Shilanka Lewis (Assistant Professor of Law)

An Introduction to Law and Justice invites students into the fast-paced world of law, justice, and real-world decision-making. Through hands-on simulations, current events, and an immersive courthouse and law school field experience, students will explore how laws are made, how trials work, and how justice is shaped every day. Whether you're curious about becoming a lawyer, passionate about social issues, or just love a good debate, this course offers an exciting look at how the legal system impacts our lives.
Exploring Astronomical + Poetic Light Claudine Moreau (Assistant Teaching Professor of Astronomy)

Exploring Astronomical + Poetic Light invites students to explore how astronomers use light to understand the universe and how writers use light to shape image, meaning, and emotion. In this immersion course, students investigate starlight, atmospheric color, spectroscopy, eclipses, redshift, telescope imaging, and cosmic time while learning to craft poems inspired by astronomical phenomena. Through hands-on experiments, guided creative writing workshops, and solar and nighttime observing sessions, students build a unique blend of scientific understanding and artistic expression. A trip to Morehead Planetarium deepens their understanding of both the physical behavior of light and the imaginative ways it illuminates human perception.
Chemistry in the Kitchen Mary McManamy (Associate Teaching Professor of Chemistry)

Have you ever wondered what makes a meal? This course will explore the making of a meal through the lens of chemistry. Topics will include origins of food, the basic food molecules, the chemistry of culinary techniques, the chemical purpose of ingredients in a recipe, and how you can have better cooking through chemistry. These chemical skills will translate to and inform future culinary adventures.
Start Up Sprint: Concept to Creation Dina Rousset (Director of the Doherty Center) and Elena Kennedy (Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship)

This experience will give students a structured opportunity to explore creating a venture through a structured process. Participating students will form teams, explore opportunities utilizing a design thinking process, engage in customer discovery, prototype ventures, and build a budget for production. The session will culminate in a pitch competition and product showcase.
